Ragnarok Released | Review from Metal Invader (http://www.metal-invader.com/db/reviews-3306.html):
Epic themes and lyrics can be found as it was expected in TYR's new work. "Ragnarok" is an album full of war atmosphere and battlefield's atmosphere as it has to be a work with such a title, but it is very different from most of the similar releases from other epic heavy metal bands, and that's because the approach of the band is more lyrical than barbaric as it usually is. With very clean vocals without any roughness at all, and their well known epic attitude, TYR manage to create a very nice result that sounds unique enough in a genre that is overcrowded and also very much alike between the bands. Of course there are many parts in their sings that will maybe remind you of something but the final result aren't common and it is also very good. The only thing that I would change in this work if I could is the sound, that is a little more weaker than I would like, but this is always a matter of personal taste so it can't be considered as a negative point here. If you are a fan of epic metal music with the well known Scandinavian way this is a release for you.

Review from fishcomcollective (http://www.fishcomcollective.net/archives/479/):
Author: Upchuck Undergrind Tyr revels defiantly in ancient pagan culture as a rebellion against the hostile overthrow of the old ways by the arrogant force of Christianity. The intelligence and musicality behind this band is pretty stunning. Tyr magnificently fuses melody and crunch and crafts songs that are totally metal but also hint at folk stylings without compromising the metallic aspect of the band. There are some prog elements here, along with a bit of thrash, as well. Eclectic in a very accessible way, Tyr is a smart, gripping band providing a refreshing and unique voice in the metal scene. argh, this sounds nice. Týr and 200 impress me more than teitur and the others because they're more unique. |

fabulous koncert! loved "The Edge" especially
The new album definetly shows promise! |

Yes, the concert was great! Too bad we see so little of them around these parts.
I just noticed that I've got one of the tracks from the new album stuck in my head, and I've only listened to the album two times. The new album is not as singalongable (it's a word) as their previous work, but there are definitely some catchy tunes. I don't think there's a single filler track on the album.
The production quality is excellent, almost too good. Would be nice to have a more raw edge to the album. But it does showcase the talents of the musicians brilliantly.
As a concept album Týr have also succeeded. There's a clear storyline in the lyrics, and the music is also coherent between tracks and self-referential throughout the album.
Yes, I like the new album a lot, but I don't think it will spawn classics like The Edge, Regin Smiður, Ormurin Langi, etc.

BTW, Týr are going to play at Wacken Open Air festival next year, together with Blind Guardian, Amorphis, Stratovarius, and others. WOA is the biggest metal festival in the world, so this is quite a catch for Týr, and will expose them to thousands of potential new fans. |

Nice that they are getting a break. They deserve it.
the tune you're stuck with, is it Wings of Time? That one has me going I think you're right about the production quality. It's almost too good in places, but maybe its for the best in the end to have a clean album even if it seems somewhat polished. I dont like that tavern thing they're trying to do for example...too manowar.
Edit: is it just me or are these comments too small? |
on October 10 2006 05:31:56
Yep, Wings of Time.
I don't think the comments are too small if it is the width you're thinking about. It's easier to read stuff when the sentences are not too wide. |

Serliga sterk vóru løgini The Edge, Dreams, How Far To Asgaard umframt endalagið Ramund Hin Unge, ið veruliga fekk danska partin av áskoðarunum á kók. Løgini Wild Rover og Hail To The Hammer fingu fjøldina til at syngja við, og skaptu gleði millum fólk.
