100 years since Franz Ferdinand
News by NorlanderToday, exactly 100 years ago, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip. 1 month later, on the 28th of July 1914, the Great War broke out.

Across the internet there will be many articles published over the next month. Some will focus on the bigger picture and grand strategic considerations that fueled the march to war, others will focus on personal tragedies and stories of heroism.

I just wanted to share this picture, which has always fascinated me. Three men walking back across the battlefield. One using a makeshift stick to steady himself with, all of them torn and ragged.

"makeshift stick"... Nah, I'm pretty sure that's a real stick smiley
Laluu on July 02 2014 19:32:19
Maybe the guy took a crutch and broke some bits off, so he could use it as a stick.
Norlander on July 03 2014 02:49:46
Wondering why the guy on the left is in a completely different uniform.
Jogvanth on July 03 2014 12:51:47
That's because he's wearing a German uniform!
Laluu on July 03 2014 13:03:09
I thought the 2 guys were wearing British uniforms and the guy on the left a French one.
I remember seeing light blue uniforms at the Imperial War Museum's trench/WWI section, but don't remember the details.

If people are desperate to find out, they could buy this book:

The photo is clearly a colorized B/W photo, so the colors may not be right.

I don't think he's French, as it seems most of the French uniforms were double-breasted or had chest-pockets. I think that might be the M1910 Vereinfachte Feldrock, which is Feldgrau, a designation for a color that apparently is not clearly defined, but may be either greenish or bluish. The collar and cuffs seem to match, as well as the number of buttons; 8 on the front, 3 on the cuff.

Here are some more colorized photos from WWI, many of which have Germans in gray-blue uniforms.

This interesting article says that they are indeed two British soldiers and a German. The article shows the original B/W photo, and it turns out the photo has not just been colorized, other soldiers have been photoshopped out of it.

Good findsmiley
Jogvanth on July 03 2014 20:23:19
It wasn't the uniforms as such that told me he's German, but his cap.
The two on the right are clearly wearing British uniforms with the standard issue helmets for the age, while the guy on the left is wearing the late-war issue cap of the German infantry.
The width and color of the band running across the cap, along with the insignia on the front (could be either one or two insignia above each other) told of which Division and Regiment they belonged to.

Well done Vuz and Jogvanth for solving this week's conundrum and thanks Norlander for creating it.

For some reason only 2 photos the Brugge album now, something might have gotten lost over the years and transfers of hosts, etc.
