A slip-up in an art gallery, where the customer ordered some prints of "The Stig" for himself, along with a carpenter doing some repairs in a house, where he came across the white track-suit and gloves like the "Stigs", have sparked rumors of his true identity.
According to these people, "The Stigs" true identity is Ben Collins. A 33 year old former Formula 3, Le Mans, GT-series and Nascar driver.
He was also the precision-driver in the James Bond movie Quantum of Solace.
Neither Ben Collins, BBC or The Stig are willing to comment on this issue.

Several sources have over the years pointed to Ben Collins being one of several Stigs. The other name frequently mentioned is Russ Smith. These two are discussed at on Wikipedia, citing sources that reveal that both have had active roles in Top Gear for several years (as unspecified 'technical advisers'. Ben Collins was cited by name in the inquiry into Hamster's drag racing crash, etc.
