Large Hadron Collider
News by Grizlas

This spring the largest particle accelerator the world has ever seen will become operatinoal. It has been deemed the most complicated thing man has ever created and with 7000 scientists working for 20 years, it probably is.

To me it looks like something out of Doom. Have a look for yourself:

Impressive piece of engineering. Let's hope the doomsday scenarios (Micro black holes, Strangelets and Monopoles) don't hold true...

yes, i'm a bit concerned about such things aswell, even if the physicists assure us nothing of the sort will be able to damage the collider or anything outside it. For me the reasoning is straightforward; nothing like this has ever been attempted before, so there is always a possibility of something unexpected - even a calamity. anyways, I guess we'll have to wait and see...exciting stuff.

With any luck, the device opens a portal to the netherworld that unleashes machinegun-wielding beholders and such.

Well, Guess we'd better stock up on ammo before then smiley

But, seriously, I think it is exciting to see what results might come from this immense machinery.

"The CMS electromagnet is “compact” only in the sense that it is incredibly dense. At 40 feet long, it is the biggest superconducting solenoid ever made, costing $65 million, weighing about 485,000 pounds, and containing as much iron as the Eiffel Tower. From the outside it looks like a huge steel bullet protruding from the center of a steel cylinder some 50 feet tall, covered in cables and instruments and surrounded by scaffolding. “The magnetic field is immense; if they switched it on now and you had steel-capped shoes, you’d fly over there,” Barney says.

I'm all for making a computer game out of this thing, just sprinkle a bit of fantasy/sci-fi mindset and it would kick arsesmiley

Has this project died or something? Haven't heard a thing for almost a year.
