This should be interactive, and with years. There was a link to a version with years in the sidebar, but they were not very precise :/
Like Vuzman says, it's off by up to about 10 years.
I also noticed that there were many people taking issue with various aspects, e.g. when a country is considered unified (Portugal and various countries in modern Spain as well as modern Soviet/Russian areas).
Some people also claim that some of the borders and countries are mythical and have no basis in historical records at all.
