I would call it "influenced by" rather than "stealing" or just coincidence and in some cases I just can't hear the "stealing" part. You could probably find a 1000 more of these incidents/coincidences.

I don't really think these bands are in the wrong here. It seems to me that truly new things come along very rarely, and most of what has ever been created, has been created by changing something that already was. It is the degree of change that constitutes the difference between plagiarism and creativity, and I don't think any example here falls under plagiarism.

One thing that puzzles me though, is that james hetfield admits to "lifting" the Sanatarium riff but doesn't want to mention from what band. Given their historical stance on piracy, this is even more confusing.

Maybe it is because rock bands want to maintain the illusion of being creative gods. Not saying Metallica isn't creative, but would it really hurt them to say "Yeah, we lifted the Sanatarium intro from a cool Rainbow tune and spiced it up a bit"?

I agree OKJones, was just about to post my comment but got logged out.

I'm not sure "influenced by" is totally right either. To me that implies too little. When artists say they have been influenced by other artists, they usually refer to the broader "sound" of said band, and not to the specific notes of a lick or intro.

Although calling it stealing, or rip off, is also far from the right wording.

Totally agree with you Griz, but

"Yeah, we lifted the Sanatarium intro from a cool Rainbow tune and spiced it up a bit"?

I guess the Rainbow tune influenced or inspired here.

Unless you stumble and fall on the piano, you're probably not going to do anything original.
