Thats the part about Derren that used to ick me, but the more I think about it, the more I like it becuase it brings much needed attention to the fact that people, apparently, seem to accept his bogus explanations without question. |

He supposably had 24 people do 'automatic writing', i.e. where they just write numbers without thinking... and then he averaged them out somehow and they became the winning numbers. Yaha. Then he comes with even more misdirection where he says that he definitely didn't rig the official lottery by switching the balls *wink*wink*....
In other news, YouTube is filled with videos explaining how he did this trick with a simple split screen. It even seems like the guy who put the balls on the rack while the numbers were being drawn made a little mistake, and placed one of the balls slightly differently than the original balls. Then when the split screen is removed, one of the balls seems to move a little bit up.
Again, always be wary of a psychic who claims to see the future, but won't tell you until after it has happened... |

I'd say the red bmx trick didnt involve the slightest little tiny sliver of NLP
Here's how I think the bmx trick was done:
1. get simon pegg to write something on a piece of paper to keep in his wallet and promise not to look at it for 2 weeks.
2. during those two weeks, steal his wallet and replace his wish (red bmx bike) with something else plausible, i.e. not too absurd, like a leather jacket.
3. Add misdirection; - pretend that you are programming Simon Pegg to want a bike using NLP techniques when he actually wanted one all along. |

We once argued about the validity of NLP as I recall - not about its existence but wether or not it was bullshit. At that time you argued that NLP was more than just magic - that it was something that actually worked. You change your mind on that?

Ok, let's get a few things straight first: DB claims that he can practically brainwash people with NLP to do what he says in a way that seems more powerful than hypnosis. This seems to be what you think NLP is. But what DB says NLP is is not what NLP is, and not how it works.
DB does use some NLP techniques in his tricks, and sometimes it is overt and sometimes it is covert. When it is overt, he is telling you how he made X do Y using NLP. In this instance, he is doing some trick, and telling you he's using NLP as a misdirection to get you away from seeing/thinking what the real trick is. When it is covert, he's using NLP as a rhetorical tool to sound more convincing or genuine, and again, to get you to focus on something as a misdirect. |
