I have a checklist of things I need to remember, or at least consider, when I go to a festival. Believe me, it can really suck to be stuck in a tent for a week without rainproof clothing or sunscreen, or even be without earplugs.

Among the festival-goers for Rock-Im-Park, which is getting real close, we have a couple of festival virgins, so I have revised and expanded the list, and print it here, for your consideration:

Documents
Passport
Health Insurance card
Credit cards
Cash - the ATMs at the festival will have a huge queue
Driver's license
Make sure your phone has all the phone numbers you need (cancel credit cards, etc.), but it's also a good idea to have that written down somewhere, in case you lose your phone.

Clothes
1 pair pants
1 pair shorts
1/day shirts / underwear / socks
Good walking shoes - you'll walk A LOT.
Warm sweater/jacket - it can be quite cold in the evenings, regardless of day temperature.
Long underwear - if your sleeping bag might not be warm enough.

If there's a chance of rain:
Raincoat (possibly disposable)
Waterproof boots

If there's a chance of sun:
Cap/bandana
Sunglasses

Equipment
Sleeping bag + mattress
Tent - maybe you can share?
Camping chair - comfortable is best

Mobile phone + charger
Digital camera + extra battery/memory card

Toiletries
Toothbrush + paste
Deodorant - it's futile, but what the heck
Hand disinfectant - you may not get to wash your hands for the entire duration, I like to bring something to kill germs
Shampoo + towel - only if you plan to swim or spend more than 4 days at the festival
Sunblock

If you wear contacts
Extra contact lenses
Container for contact lenses
Lens cleaning liquid
Extra glasses

The small, but important, stuff
Condoms
Insect repellent
First aid kit
Sore tape - in case your shoes gnaw
Pain relievers
Earplugs for music - you can buy these on site, but maybe just crappy disposable ones
Cards/games - for chilling or killing time

In addition, you might need bottled water and canned beer, and something to eat if your tent is far away from an eatery. I usually bring meal replacement bars or candy bars.
Obviously, food, water and beer can be bought on site, but is probably cheaper to get off site, before the festival (leaving during the festival is usually a drag and a hassle).

For the camp
A pavilion tent
A flag

btw, I didn't forget to put an umbrella on the list. Besides the fact that umbrellas annoy everyone behind it at a concert, they're annoying to have to carry around all the time and if there's wind they're not much use anyway. I prefer a disposable raincoat, which, when paired with boots, keeps you dry and also leaves your hands free.

A tarp (presenning) is good idea to cover your tent in case of heavy rain. Even better is a really big tarp that can cover several tents, since it gives you dry space between tents as well.

It is now almost time for you guys to leave...

Brilliant list, Vuzman. I'd like to comment and add a few things that I've found useful:

Knife - ideally a swiss-army-knife. Very handy in a variety of situations. E.g. opening food-wrapping, fixing a tent, removing a splinter etc. etc.

String/twine. Especially useful for mending your tent and putting a tarp or pavillion tent in place. (Some tents also come with a pouch of spare parts)

Small/tiny flashlight with extra batteries. This will e.g. help you not set fire to your tent when looking for your toothbrush.

You mention food... absolutely. Many festivalgoers fail to consider this. Often you'll end up with your tent being at least a half-hour walk from the nearest (very expensive) food vendor that isn't open when you need it. Bring some food that will keep. I often buy different bread, cakes and cookie-things, because they tend to keep ok in the heat.

A small tip: Get a/some big water/soda bottle as soon as you've set up camp and fill it at the nearest water post. Will come in very useful almost right away.

Good ideas. Have a few comments, though smiley

Knife - Since moving to Denmark I have learned to get along without a knife, and I'm amazed at how I actually never really need one. I guess it's just a macho bottleopener. And I hope you can raise a tent without using a knife...

String/twine - Booh! Duck tape is all you need.

Small/tiny flashlight with extra batteries - I use my phone for this, but yes, that will come in handy. Maybe a camping lamp would be even better.

Food - yes, absolutely.

water/soda bottle - I have started to buy a couple of pre-filled water bottles before going. It's more expensive, but easier smiley

some kind of music player so we can chill to music while recovering from last night's heavy drinking.. (it's not like we'll get enough of music from all the concerts i'm sure smiley )

jep, that would be great. This is a must for Roskilde or similar festival where you camp for days before the concerts begin, but it would still be nice. Ideally, a cheap boombox (or whatever ghettoblasters are called nowadays smiley) from Netto, since it might get stolen or mistreated by drunks (=us).

Bumping this thread since Roskilde is drawing nearer....

A couple additions:

Strips - at Rock-Im-Park we found that strips can be quite handy, especially when speed is an issue.

Water - a big 10-15 L collapsible water tank is perfect. Weighs and fills next to nothing when empty, but saves a lot of trips to the water faucet.

Beer/booze - this is relatively cheap on-site, at least outside the festival area (i.e. on the camping area), but if you want it really cheap you need to bring it. I find that the cost/benefit-analysis of BYOB is not favorable, and buy all my stuff on-site. Can't remember what a frame of beer costs, but a 75 cL bottle of booze + 1.5 L soda + ice cost 200,-

Cactus - Some pills to allow you to drink even more smiley

To be honest, apart from your personal stuff (phones, cameras, credit cards, etc.), there's not really anything on the list that you can't buy on site (at least when it comes to Roskilde), so if you forget something, don't sweat it.

And one more list, compiled from advice on Roskilde Festival's Facebook page:

#1: Don't miss the warm up days. They are *at least* half the fun of Roskilde.

#2: Be open for a conversation with anyone and make conversations with strangers - it's the most fun ever! And you make new friends (or e.g. learn Swedish)

#3: Say YES more often than NO

#4: Want to get close to Orange Stage/Arena? Just when a concert starts, people usually stop waiting in line and go for center - completely ignoring that there are still room up front. Keep an eye out for the red and green lights on both sides of the stage.

#5: Don't be afraid to go to concerts alone.

#6: Plan how to set up your camp (preferable area? size? who runs for it with the tents? who guards the luggage?)

#7: Bring lots of duct tape, for every problem conceivable.

#8: Get used to drinking hot beers (you can practice when you're drinking tea/ coffee)

But:

#9: Make use of the beer exchange when you buy Tuborg at the festival! You can swap a hot 6 pack for a nice chilled 6 pack. Nothing beats a nice cold beverage after a good dance.

#10: Make a camp theme with daily activities and invite random people to join.

#11: Place your camping chairs in your tents when you leave the camp. If you don’t, you can almost be sure that they get stolen.

#12: Bring both sun lotion and rubber boots no matter what the weather forecast says!

#13: Don’t be afraid to go and see bands you have never heard of before - they are often the most exciting concerts.

#14: Get enough sugar and salt, it's the key to living a long festival life!

#15: Fill your water bottles BEFORE you go to sleep (that way you avoid 25 degrees, long queues and hangovers when your throat feels like Sahara in the morning.)

#16: Expect and accept everything... (Weird stuff can and will happen! Enjoy it, when it does!)

#17: It might be damn hot in the daytime, but at night it's freezing so make sure to bring something you know you can keep warm in - even though you feel silly dragging it all the way over there.

#18: CANNED FOOD; tuna, mackerel, pate – everything that comes in a can. It’s a good way to save money and it often tastes quite nice after a beer or ten. And the durability is perfect for a hot festival.

#19: Prepare for not being clean from day 1, it is not disgusting because no one is.

#20: Don't stress out, trying to see 19 bands every day. It's a big festival, you're always missing out on something so just accept it and enjoy the present moment. Camp life is a big, awesome part of being on Roskilde.

Let's see if it's not favorable this year... unless someone finds the tent of eternal bliss and relieves us of it smiley
