Mars... should be specific enough... nothing is within hundreds of thousands of miles! smiley

This must be the crater Gusev in where the Mars Spirit rover landed. Th site was chosen because of hopes to find evidence that liquid water could be found in the open on the now frozen Mars.

edit: mistype.

More specific: The image is taken from 'Low Ridge' where the Spirit rover spent the winter in 2006, thus it is called Spirit's 'Winter Haven'. In the background is McCool Hill, the biggest hill of the Columbia hills. Oh, and the image is mirror flipped.

New York, 1917. "Landship Recruit on Union Square." The U.S.S. Recruit, a wooden battleship erected by the Navy, served as a World War I recruiting station at Union Square from 1917 to 1920, when it "set sail" for Coney Island. This is the first in a series of photographs depicting life around and aboard the landlocked boat. 5x7 glass negative, George Grantham Bain Collection.

This took me a while to figure out! nice ask smiley

After I had figured out the place, (by looking for clock towers in neo-gothic style, and using google maps/street view), it took me a good while to figure out what the hell this battleship was doing there. I'm not a wikipedian, (and my ip address is apparently restricted, so I cannot create an account there) but it seems to me that these pages ought to be linked:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Square_(New_York_City)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Recruit_(1917)

This is quite an interesting little bit of history that I think should be available to people who want to know more about Union Square Park. Maybe someone can edit the wiki, or propose an edit?
