It's Alfred the Great.

Don't understand the British hint, though?

I only meant that had it not been for him, the danish/viking invastion would certainly have succeded and England would probably have been ruled by danes for a couple of hundred years or more. Who knows how history would have unfolded from there.

England was ruled by Danes for a couple of hundred years...Specially if you look at the entry vuzman posted Alfred only held a small portion of England, around the county of Wessex.

Later there was even a House of Denmark...which was intertwined with the house of Wessex (Last King in the House of Denmark was half-brother with the restored king of the house of Wessex).

The kingdom of wessex was by no means a small part of england and was by far the richest and strongest part. The vikings never had complete control of the other kingdoms during their occupation - not before 1015. They only ruled england for some 50 years as I see it. Had the whole country been under viking rule already in 871 - which almost happened - it would have been a different story. Atleast that's my guess.

The point is moo anyway; the Anglo-Saxons (which enlists Alfred the Great) came, for a large part, from Scandinavia, and the Normans (led by William the Conqueror) were originally, as their name hints, also from Scandinavia.

Let's regress...: What is the name of this boat, and where is the picture taken?

I make it to be the Duomo di Milano or Milan Cathedral.

Can't find the exact picture though.

Aye right you are.

I seem to have trouble finding that picture now myself, I took it from wiki, but I think it was connected too Piazza del Duomo (Duomo square) not the cathedral. If memory serves me (as it often doesn't) this should have been taken back in 1905 or there abouts.

Anyhow your it.

Right-o.

New question: What is the name of this gun, and what is special about it?
(Edit: Have changed the question)

Clue: The man who designed this gun has a name almost synonomous with weapons today.

"The Colt-Browning M1895, nicknamed potato digger due to its unusual operating mechanism, is an air cooled, belt fed, gas operated machine gun that fires from a closed bolt with a cyclic rate of 450 rounds per minute. Based on a John Moses Browning design dating to 1889, it was one of the first successful gas operated machine guns to enter service"

"..gun's nickname of "potato digger", as the operating lever would dig into the ground if it were fired from too low a position."
