Correct. It is a F-86 Sabre.

Oh well. I need to await the hints on the first guy I guess... having searched all LTG's in the civil war era and coming up short...

I really wanted it to be Zachary Taylor, as that would have made Mr ? into Grant, but it isn't so it doesn'tsmiley

Well, clue 1 it is then.

I'm wishing for a person that knew both of these men.
The first person was a good friend of the man on the left while the picture to the right, is a more formal picture of the second (or third) man in the question.

Well the man on the left now is Grant. On the right is still Ike...

So somebody who was a good friend of Grant and somehow made sense to Ike?

Somehow it could be Winfield Scott Hancock, who was a General and a presidential candidate, but he didn't win, unlike Grant and Ike...

And even if he knew Grant he doesn't personally know Ike...

Could also be Fox Conner, but having a hard time believing he knew Grant, even if he was alive before Grant died.

Naa I'll await a further cluesmiley

Ok final guestimate of the evening.

John J. Pershing, who was head of the honor guard for Grant, and also knew Ike personally, but he really didn't know Grant.

Are you sure that's Grant? Doesn't look like him, especially not the first picture.

Torellion is correct smiley

That took you guys a while. Guess the Geese have started migrating.

In order to clarify, the person on the left in the question is John S. Mosby, a Confederate Colonel in the Civil War, who later became a republican and close friend and campaign manager for Grant. Mosby was a close friend the father of General George S. Patton, and Mosby and Patton used to talk tactics and warfare, when Patton was just a young boy. Ike was Patton's senior officer during WWII.
