It looks a lot like the "Boneyard" at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base near Tucson, Arizona.

That is correct.

Alrighty then.

Identify this plane, and what is special about it?

It's a TU-22M. I'll go dig up the special thing (apart from being shot down last week),

It's the only airplane you can't enter or exit while the engine is running, because you have to enter it through the air vents because it has no doors? smiley

Or

It has the best concealed door in the world? smiley

Well, I was more thinking of it's absolutely horrific starting service record and subsequent popularity in military service.

Well the horrific starting service record was for the TU-22, which isn't the same aircraft as the TU-22M. They called the TU-22M because

the linkage to the earlier Tu-22 was intended by Tupolev to convince the Soviet government that it was an economical follow-on to the earlier aircraft.

Anyhow new question: Name the make, model and year.

I have no idea what that is. Looks like it's taken directly out of Star Wars or something. Doesn't look like a boat, but it looks like it could float. Can't figure out what tha bloody 'ell that wheel is good for, except for towing maybe.

Looks like a cross between a katamaran, an aircraft and a prop from Star Wars.

As to what it is, it's a rusting pile of junk smiley

It's not a movie prop, otherwise you're pretty close.

A hint is that there are two big parts missing from the ... thing.

I haven't answered this question because it is something that is immediately recognizable to me, but instead I'll throw in an extra image hint. From the sides of this object you can see some markings that would further help you in identifying it.

You guys have too much spare time. Seriously!

After the second image I've learned that it is an old 1970's Soviet Vertical-Takeoff Amphibious Aircraft prototype called Bartini Beriev VVA-14.

I've also added a picture of what it used to look like.

(New question will be coming soon)

Amazing! It's so huge!

Has this been used to break some sort of speed record ?
It doesn't look that much like a military vehicle, though I can hardly imagine a vehicle of this size in the old CCCP could be anything else!

Beriev VVA-14

I interpreteted the text to 'CCCP 10687' and first hit on google gave me a 'Beriev VVA-14' and it's history.

This two things, missing are wings and jet-engine:

It seems to be a 'vertical take-off amphibious aircraft' according to wikipedia.
Some more facts from Russian Central Air Museum: http://www.monino.com/avia/company/monino/e_monino/vva14.htm
...and some more facts from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bartini_Beriev_VVA-14

oh well... I let you have it, you can post a question once you get off from your busy job smiley

I can see it seems that I had been waiting for someone to post the answer, then pretend I knew it as well, but the time was actually spent on searching for the answer, but to no avail smiley

Well most all aircraft are immediately recognizable to me, especially those that frequently make the picture of the day on Airliners.net.
