Gottlieb Damler

Most famous for inventing the vibrator, some hate it and some just can't live without it.

Moving on to the question, this man made structure weighs about 16 times more than the Empire State Building.

Not that I can find a page talking about these issues but the Empire State building weights approximately 365.000 tonnes, and the Great Pyramid of Giza approximately 6.000.000 tonnes (which is about 16 times more).

Correct?

Denzel

From which film is this line: 'Play it again Sam.'?

(In case there are several, I am looking for the earliest one featuring this particular line of dialog.)

That one is easy.
Yes, I think there are several, but I'm sure you are referring to "Casablanca". The others are parodies of the scene in Casablanca.

I think one of the parodies was in one of the "Naked Gun" films, where Sam starts playing "Ding-dong the Witch is Dead" from "The Wizard of Oz"

Funny, that has to be one of the few questions where no research was necessary (the Denzel picture being another one).

New question:
Now that California is planning to change marriage-laws to allow for sam-sex marriages, at least two possible weddings have received some media attention with the more famous future spouse having issued statements.
Name two of these couples (one male and one female)?
What are the persons involved famous for?
(I have two specific couples in mind, but others may be accepted)

Actually, you're wrong, and it wasn't an easy question (well, I thought it was, but you proved me wrong) smiley

From Wikipedia:
One of the lines most closely associated with the film—"Play it again, Sam"—is a misquotation. When Ilsa first enters the Cafí© Americain, she spots Sam and asks him to "Play it once, Sam, for old times' sake." When he feigns ignorance, she responds, "Play it, Sam. Play 'As Time Goes By.' " Later that night, alone with Sam, Rick says, "You played it for her and you can play it for me." and "If she can stand it, I can! Play it!"

The line is featured in the 1946 Marx Brothers' movie A Night in Casablanca, and also in the 1972 Woody Allen film Play It Again, Sam.

The Marx bros. one would be the right answer according to Yutani's criteria.

Your question wasn't valid, but I'll answer it anyway: smiley
I believe the couples you are thinking of are Ellen DeGeneres (from the Ellen show etc.) and Portia de Rossi (from Ally McBeal etc.) as well as George Takei (Sulu from Star Trek original series) and Brad Altman.

As punishment for your cocksuredness (it's a word, look it up smiley) you must come up with another question for me (because I don't have time right now) smiley

Heh, spot on Vuz, I was looking for A night in Casablanca.

Darn Wiki has an answer for everything. I thought my question would give more headache than it did, after I would say it is not from Casablanca to the first one to name the obvious trap answer smiley

Ouch! Touche!

I was too quick off the mark there. I should have known better - or at least have checked my facts with Wiki.

My punishment is quite severe. I usually don't answer these questions, because I can't think of a new one. This time I had a question prepared and Vuzman gave a 100% correct answer in 0.0003 seconds (or thereabouts). Some younger people might also know George Takei from "Heroes".

Here goes...

Which band?
This "band" had a number of hits and their debut album earned over 60 platinum awards. The people involved were worried that it would be a flop and did not use their real names in the credits to be able to distance themselves from it later on if necessary. Their music has also been used in many films and film trailers.

Are you sure you mean 60 times platinum? That's an awful lot. Michael Jackson's Thriller has gotten 29 US platinum awards... I know the rules for platinum awards differ between countries, but 60?

I would guess Gorillaz though, whose debut album sold over 6 million copies. At first it was a secret who was behind, although that might have been more of a publicity stunt than fear of anything.

Guessing Snap!, though the source for 60x platinum is nowhere to be found.

The sales numbers needed for a platinum award depend on the country in question. I think it's about 75.000 in Denmark.
The number 60+ would, I assume, mean something along the lines of e.g. 3 platinum awards in the U.S., 4 in the UK, 7 in France, 2 in Spain, etc. etc.

Wrong and wrong. I don't think it was ever a secret that Damon Albarn et al. were involved in the Gorillaz project.

CLUE:
They were among the first to use samples extensively for other than merely percussion/rhythm purposes. They even got into trouble because of copyright/intellectual property rights, I think.

Didn't think so either, but
The band's first release was Tomorrow Comes Today EP, released in 2000. It was very well received in the UK underground music scene and generated a lot of word-of-mouth advertising, as well as a large shroud of mystery over who was behind Gorillaz and what could be expected from the band in the months to come. Promo outlets circulated a booklet with the fictional backstory behind the cartoon band.

Anyway, found the answer:
In December 1990, after 8 months of preparation, Cretu released Enigma's debut album, the groundbreaking MCMXC a.D. that received over 60 platinum awards worldwide. [...]

Before the album was released, Cretu was cautious of the response towards the upcoming album, decided to forgo mentioning his and most of the personnel's real name and credited himself as Curly M.C., while the album sleeve contained little information about the background of the project, furthering the mystery about the creators of the album and leading to speculation whether Enigma was a band, a person or a group.
