At some point every guitar player should learn the fretboard. Once mastered, you will have no problem learning all sorts of scales and you will be able to see the chords you have been playing in a whole new context.

This is something I should be working on, but I've been lazy these past months, and don't by any means know all my fretboard yet. Nevertheless, here's how I do it:

Learning the fretboard is tedious work, and should therefore be made as fun as possible in order for you to stay with it. I've found this little program that runs you through a session where you have to guess notes. Do this for 10 mins a day for a month and I guarantee you'll learn that fretboard!

you just have to stick with it.....yawn smiley

members can find the fretwarrior program under downloads.
